The inaugural Florida Surf Film Festival is a wrap, and the screening panelists and founders are pleased to announce the winners of the 2013 awards. “It has been a delight to bring a truly international lineup of contemporary surf films to our audience,” said Festival Director and Co-Founder, John Brooks. “We are thrilled with the overall success of the inaugural event and looking forward to continuing quarterly film nights throughout the year as well as preparing for next years festival.” The 2013 festival kicked off with the Patrons’ Dinner, including a Filmmaker Q&A and world premiere of Taylor Steele’s film Missing. Friday and Saturday night showcased 8 feature films and 15 short films, an impromptu art contest, and DJ LanceO of Kulcha Shok Muzik kept everyone lively into the wee hours of the night.
The screening panelists have entered their selections, along with our viewers’ choices. The awards are as follows:
- Best Feature: Slow Dance – Producer – Beren Hall, Director – Dane Reynolds
- Best Cinematography: The Heart and The Sea – Producer, Director, & Cinematographer – Nathan Oldfield
- Best Soundtrack: Good Morning Miyazaki – Producer & Director – Matt Wescott
- Best Short: Done – Producer – John John Florence Inc., Director – Blake Vincent Kueny
- Viewers Choice Feature: Missing – Producer – Rip Curl & Garage Entertainment, Director – Taylor Steele
- Viewers Choice Short: Handcrafted: Thomas Bexon – Producer & Director – Mick Soiza
- Viewers Choice Short Honorable Mention: Step N’ Soul – Producer & Director- Toma Jablon
Kevin Miller, Founder and President, said, “It’s been such a great year for surf documentary films, and we were lucky to have screened the passion and hard work of the filmmakers for surf film enthusiasts of Florida. We had attendees from all over the southeast, and we look forward to broadening our reach next year to share these beautiful pieces and introduce more filmmakers to lovers of surf cinema. Atlantic Center for the Arts really partnered well with our cause, and we are happy to announce that we’ll be back there again November 7-8, 2014.”
The Florida Surf Film Festival’s mission is to invigorate Florida surf culture through film appreciation and artistic expression, exhibiting contemporary documentary films.
Atlantic Center for the Arts is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3), interdisciplinary artists-in-residence community and arts education facility dedicated to promoting artistic excellence by providing talented artists an opportunity to work and collaborate with some of the world’s most distinguished contemporary artists in the fields of music composition and the visual, literary and performing arts. Community interaction is coordinated through on-site and outreach presentations, workshops and exhibitions.
